Setting Up OpenClaw on WhatsApp

WhatsApp Integration

WhatsApp is one of the most popular channels for OpenClaw. Once connected, your AI assistant responds directly in WhatsApp — just like texting a friend.

Prerequisites

• OpenClaw installed and configured
• A WhatsApp account with an active phone number
• Your phone with WhatsApp installed

Setup Steps

Step 1: Enable WhatsApp Channel

In your OpenClaw configuration, enable the WhatsApp channel:

Step 2: Link Your Device

OpenClaw uses the WhatsApp Web protocol. When you start the gateway, it generates a QR code:

1. Open WhatsApp on your phone
2. Go to Settings → Linked Devices
3. Tap "Link a Device"
4. Scan the QR code displayed in your terminal

Step 3: Verify Connection

Send a test message to your own number or have someone message you. OpenClaw should respond automatically.

Configuration Options

Auto-Reply Mode

Choose when OpenClaw responds:

• All messages — Responds to every incoming message
• Mentions only — Only responds when mentioned in groups
• Direct messages only — Ignores group chats

Message Formatting

WhatsApp supports basic formatting that OpenClaw uses:

• Bold for emphasis
• Italic for titles
• Code for technical content
• Lists with bullet points

Tips

• Group chats: OpenClaw can participate in group conversations — configure mention triggers
• Media: OpenClaw can receive and process images sent via WhatsApp
• Voice messages: With FFmpeg installed, OpenClaw can transcribe voice messages
• Status: OpenClaw shows as "online" when the gateway is running
